“The
friendship that can cease has never been real.”
Saint Jerome
One gift, and one gift alone, lies in the hands of a party leader
in Opposition. He can choose his friends. On the European
level, that means he can select his international allies. He
can offer and receive comfort from them. He can share ideas,
ideals, and philosophies. He can build a common vision.
We believe that the Conservatives are badly done by with our
present alliance with the European Peoples Party. As our paper
– the Corpse Bride - proves, we would be electorally,
structurally and financially better off if we move out with
our real ideological partners. At the same time, we would be
able to keep a friendly though more distant association with
Europe’s Christian Democrats, dealing with each other
as good neighbours rather than as bad tenants. The
European Parliament demands good neighbourliness – and
a majority - to pass votes. It is in the Christian Democrat
interest to keep us as their associates where our interests
cross. Where they diverge, it is in our interest to have the
liberty to stand up openly for our beliefs. As we have seen
time and time again across Europe, silence proves the breeding
ground for despair, and that itself is the precursor for extremism.
So we applaud David Cameron’s bold and truly correct judgement
when he says he will leave the EPP and create a new alliance.
These pages are here to offer him our fullest support, and explain
to those who are interested why what seems at first sight like
a trifling decision will have massive consequences both for
our own domestic thinking, and for the otherwise forlorn defenders
of national sovereignty who stand scattered across our massive
continent. Support us. Make a stand. Make
a difference.
