“Nothing is more obstinate than a fashionable consensus.”
Margaret Thatcher

A Done Deal Undone

This represents a small contribution, by people involved in big grassroots organisations, to an even bigger debate.

These pages provide some documentation behind what was supposed to happen with our EPP alliance, once it was renegotiated. We contrast it with a comment made by a former Deputy Leader of the Conservative MEPs with what actually happened.

A Letter from the Leader

The Reality

"As an MEP, I spent five years in Brussels working alongside the EPP. Our positions were simply incompatible.

“I am sorry to say that all efforts to sort out the differences just never worked out. After deals struck under both Hague and later under Howard, we were supposed to have an effective stand-alone group of international conservatives. But the EPP never took this as more than a sop. Our staffing, our financing, even our website was never allowed to emerge from under their shadow.

“So the only alternative that makes sense is to form our own group, and take back control of our own affairs. That way, we can do a better job of it than leaving it in the hands of people who don't share our world vision."

Former Deputy Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament
